An easy ride in the footsteps of the Templar and Hospitaller monk-soldiers, winding through the moors and forests of the Larzac. At La Couvertoirade, dismount and take in the beauty of the medieval village !

From the village of L’Hospitalet to the stone fortress of La Couvertoirade, traverse wide open spaces and step back in time! In an idyllic countryside setting, beautiful trails and the route of an old railway line await you. One notable challenge: a 1.5km stony climb through the woods. Once in La Couvertoirade, why not extend this delightful outing with a detour to the mill?

Description

  1. From L’Hospitalet-du-Larzac, head towards Egalières, cross the Canalettes forest and join the old railway line just after La Portalerie, turning left onto it.
  2. At the Baraque Froide crossroads, cross the departmental road and continue straight on, passing through Cazejourdes and carrying on towards La Couvertoirade.
  3. From La Couvertoirade, take the D185, then turn right off it and follow the track leading to La Salvetat, passing through Le Cun and La Blaquèrerie until you reach the D7. Turn right, then left onto the road towards La Portalerie to rejoin the old railway line; follow it to the left to return to the starting point.

Recommandations

This route passes through pastureland, and livestock guard dogs are present amongst the herds to protect them. 
If you encounter livestock guard dogs:
- stop and get off your bike so they can get a clear view of you; remain calm and passive; do not threaten them or stroke them
- give the herd a wide berth and keep your distance so as to disturb it as little as possible
- continue on your way, walking alongside your bike
- keep your dogs on a lead.
