In the land of Roquefort
This loop is to the « Brebis’Cyclette » bike ride what a strong Roquefort is to a milder Roquefort. The ascent to the causse of Saint-Affrique and the Aiguières pass are the two challenges of this route marked out by attractive sites: the dolmen de Tiergues, the ripening caves, the Tournemire amphitheatre, the Saint-Jean d’Alcas fort, before a gentle ending through the Sorgues valley.

Dolmen de Tiergues - David Potron
DolmenTiergues dolmen
With nearly 1,000 dolmens, Aveyron is the French department with the highest number of these prehistoric monuments. Contrary to popular belief, they were not built by the Celts, but by Neolithic communities more than 4,500 years ago.
The word “dolmen,” meaning “stone table” in Breton, refers to prehistoric collective burial sites. Listed as a historic monument, the Tiergues dolmen is one of the most remarkable in Aveyron. Explored in the 20th century by archaeologist Émile Cartailhac, it bears witness to the beliefs and funeral practices of our distant ancestors. Nestled in a preserved natural setting, this site offers a true journey into the heart of prehistory.

Cour de la Ferme de Mascourbe - Roquefort Tourisme
History and heritageMascourbe Farm
The Mascourbe farm, recorded as early as 1373, belonged to the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. Rebuilt around 1583, it is now a fine example of rural architecture with medieval origins. Its buildings are arranged around a large rectangular courtyard, typical of agricultural estates of the period.
This site bears witness to everyday life and territorial organization under the influence of the knightly orders.
