From brick red to wine-red, every shade of red earth lies beneath your tyres, and every level of difficulty awaits you too: a grand exploration of the Rougier de Camarès

Red soil and a ‘black’ difficulty rating for this gruelling loop: the route offers everything from smooth trails near the Montlaur canals to highly technical sections, including a section where you’ll have to carry your bike up the climb to La Loubière. It’s a chance to see for yourself that, from the plain to the small hills and the plateau, the terrain of Le Rougier is no walk in the park!

Description

  1. From the village hall, head towards the D10 road in the direction of Sylvanès/Gissac. After 3 km, take the left-hand turn onto the D101 towards Montlaur.
  2. Continue for 500 m and take the track on the right which climbs up to the Andabre gîte, then carry on to the village of Gissac (water point at the wash house)
  3. A lovely descent to the mill. Carry on along a magnificent single track that runs alongside a small lake before tackling a technical climb through an oak forest leading to the Loubière plateau (you may need to carry your bike): stunning views of the Rougier, the Merdelou and the Monts de Lacaune.
  4. Carry on for a few kilometres along a wide track to the Croix del Pas (a junction of several marked trails).
  5. Continue up a short but technical climb leading to the Relais de Montaigut (Le Rouquet): exceptional views of Montaigut Castle.
  6. The loop continues with a long, easy descent to Montlaur, set amongst the red earth.
  7. Finally, head to the village of Camarès along relatively flat paths and return to the starting point.
